墨尔本大学商学院首任Griffin经济史讲席教授，主要从事经济史与发展经济学研究。

龚教授于1993年获英国剑桥大学（University of Cambridge）经济学博士学位（Ph.D. in Economics）。曾任香港科技大学社会科学部Yan Ai基金会社会科学讲席教授，以及香港大学商学院Sein and Isaac Souede经济史讲席教授。在香港科技大学和香港大学任职期间，龚教授还曾担任副院长（科研），社会科学学部主任等职务。

龚教授的研究聚焦于中国经济史及政治经济学的相关课题。截至目前，已在Quarterly Journal of Economics, The Economic Journal, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of the European Economic Association, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Economic History, Journal of Economic Growth等国际学术期刊发表论文五十余篇，并为剑桥经济史撰写二篇书目章节。龚教授曾或正担任The Economic Journal, Journal of Economic History, Regional Science and Urban Economics, Explorations in Economic History, Journal of Comparative Economics等多份国际权威经济学期刊的编辑职务，并曾担任比较经济学会（The Association for Comparative Economic Studies, ACES）执行委员及主席。在港科大和港大期间他指导过的博士生多达十八人。
