China has achieved remarkable accomplishments, especially over the last four decades of reform and opening-up. It has eliminated extreme poverty and entered a new stage of high-quality development that aims to meet the people’s needs for a better life. With a population of 1.4 billion, China has become the most innovative dynamic market, the biggest manufacturer and the second largest economy in the world, which shows the great potential to be a cradle of cutting-edge researches in both economics and management. Zhejiang University is a comprehensive, research-intensive and innovative university with a rich history and outstanding reputation, leading the way of Chinese higher education. It is ranked 42nd in the QS World University Rankings (2023) and 67th in the Times Global Business Rankings 2022.
Tsingshan Institute for Advanced Business Studies of Zhejiang University (ZJU-TIABS) was established in early 2021 with the full support from Tsingshan Holding Group, the world’s leading private enterprise (ranking 238th in the 2022 Fortune Global 500). Inspired by Princeton Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), TIABS aims to create a new innovative platform supporting the world’s top economists and management scientists to immerse themselves in academic research in China, and provide a shared space for fully open and creative cultural exchanges. TIABS is committed to supporting international, forward-looking and original research under the leadership of its first executive dean Xiaobo WU, who is a Qiushi distinguished professor at Zhejiang University.
Zhejiang University is located in Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province, which is at the forefront of China’s market economy reform. As one of the six ancient capitals of China, Hangzhou has a profound human history of more than 2,200 years as well as a beautiful natural environment with three world cultural heritages: Liangzhu cultural relics that exemplify the 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, the longest artificial canal in the world—the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and the West Lake with humanity and beauty blended together. Moreover, Hangzhou is also the pioneer of China’s reform and opening up, the hometown of e-commerce and digital economy, and the demonstration zone of common prosperity, which provides unique advantages to conduct first-class research in economics and management.
