Rachel Q. ZHANG

Tsingshan Chair Professor at the Tsingshan Institute for Advanced Business Studies (TIABS) and the School of Management at Zhejiang University.

She obtained her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences from Northwestern University in the United States in 1994. She has held positions in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, and both the Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics and the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics, and Operations Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). During her tenure at HKUST, she served as a Chair Professor and a member of the University Substantiation and Promotion Committee.

Her research primarily focuses on modeling and structural analysis of complex systems, as well as developing methodologies and approaches to address the complex problems encountered in real-world applications. While her work is largely situated within operations research and management, she has made significant contributions at the intersection of operations with finance, computer science, and economics. She has published numerous papers in top international journals in management science and methodology, including Management Science, Operations Research, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Advances in Applied Probability, and Mathematics of Operations Research.

Professor Zhang has received the U.S. National Science Foundation's Outstanding Young Investigator Award (NSF CAREER Award) in 1995 and has secured over ten research grants from the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong. She was invited to deliver a keynote speech at the largest and most prestigious annual conference in the field of Operations Research and Operations Management (INFORMS Annual Conference 2021). She serves as an Associate Editor for the international journal Manufacturing & Service Operations Management and as a Senior Editor for Production and Operations Management. Additionally, she has served as an Associate Editor for the leading journal in industrial engineering, IISE Transactions, and will assume the role of a Department Editor starting in 2026.
